The Interior Door Hardware Spec Sheet: What to Confirm Before You Order

A pre-order checklist for door function, handing, backset, thickness, latch, privacy needs, quantities, and finish.

Interior door hardware is one of the most under-planned categories in residential renovation. By the time it's being ordered, the tile is chosen, the cabinetry is in, the plumbing fixtures have been confirmed, and most of the specification energy has been spent. Door handles get picked quickly from whatever's available in the right finish, quantities get estimated rather than counted, and the details that actually determine whether the hardware works — backset, bore diameter, door thickness, handing — get confirmed after the fact, when there's no longer time to fix a mistake without delaying the schedule.

This doesn't have to be how it goes. What follows is everything to nail down before anything ships — organized by decision type, in roughly the order you'll need to make them.

Step One: Walk Every Door

Before any other decision is made, walk the floor plan and count every interior door. Not an estimate. Every door — bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, pantries, laundry rooms, utility spaces, the door between the garage and the house, the door to the mechanical room that nobody thinks about until a contractor needs to get through it.

For each door, note: which room it enters, which direction it swings, and whether it's a single door, a double door, or a pocket door. Pocket doors are a different hardware category entirely and require a pull rather than a lever — they should be flagged separately from the outset.

This walk takes thirty minutes in most homes. It prevents the most common mistake in whole-home hardware orders, which is ordering for the doors you thought about and realizing too late that you forgot the ones you didn't.

Function: The Decision That Can't Be Wrong

Every door in the home falls into one of three function categories. Getting this wrong is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes in a residential hardware order.

Passage sets have no locking mechanism. The lever operates freely from both sides. These are for doors that close but don't need to secure — hallways, closets, pantries, and any room where privacy isn't a requirement. Passage sets are typically the most common function in a home by volume.

Privacy sets lock from the inside using a turn button or push button on the interior face, with an emergency release — typically a small slot for a coin or flathead screwdriver — on the exterior. These are for bathrooms, bedrooms, and any room where an occupant needs the ability to secure the space from within. Specifying a passage set for a bathroom or bedroom is a mistake that only becomes apparent when someone tries to lock the door, at which point the hardware has already been installed and the finish work is complete.

Dummy sets are non-operating. They're fixed to the door face for the purpose of providing a pull or visual continuity — used on the stationary panel of a double door, on bi-fold doors, on decorative doors that don't latch, and occasionally on the exterior face of a door that only needs a handle on one side. Dummy sets are sold individually rather than in pairs, since only the visible face typically requires hardware. When specifying double doors, confirm whether one panel is active and one is stationary — the stationary panel needs a dummy set, not a passage set.

Map each door on your floor plan to its function before placing any order. Do it with your contractor present if possible — they'll flag anything you've missed.

Backset: The Measurement That Has to Be Right

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore — the hole through which the latch mechanism passes. Standard residential backsets in North America are 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". The backset determines which latch will fit the door and whether the latch will align correctly with the strike plate in the door frame.

Ordering hardware with the wrong backset means the latch won't sit correctly in the door edge, the door won't close properly, and the hardware will need to be returned and reordered. In a project with a tight finish schedule, this can cost a week.

Confirming the backset takes thirty seconds. Measure from the edge of the existing door to the center of the existing bore, or ask your contractor to do it. If you're installing new doors, confirm the backset with the door supplier before specifying hardware. Standardize across the project where possible — mixing backsets creates unnecessary complexity when reordering or replacing hardware later.

Bore Diameter and Door Thickness

Standard residential interior doors are bored to 2-1/8" diameter. Most hardware is designed for this bore size. Older homes — particularly pre-war construction — sometimes have non-standard bores, either smaller (from original hardware that was never upgraded) or irregular (from previous hardware replacements done without attention to standard sizing).

If you're working in an older home, confirm the bore diameter before ordering. A bore that's slightly too small can be enlarged; a bore that's too large requires a repair plate or a door replacement, depending on severity.

Door thickness is a related consideration. Standard interior doors run 1-3/8" for hollow-core and 1-3/4" for solid-core. Higher-specification doors — particularly in custom or semi-custom millwork — sometimes run thicker. Hardware spindles are typically designed for standard thickness; non-standard doors may require extended spindles, which most quality hardware suppliers can provide but which need to be specified at the time of order.

Handing

Some lever designs are handed — meaning the lever is shaped or angled in a way that's specific to a left-hand or right-hand swing. A handed lever installed on the wrong side will either look wrong or, in some cases, operate incorrectly.

Many contemporary residential levers are reversible — the same lever works on either side by rotating the handle before installation. Confirm with the supplier whether the lever you're specifying is handed or reversible. If it's handed, map each door to its hand (determined by the direction the door swings and which side the hinge is on when you're facing the door from the outside) before ordering.

Getting handing wrong isn't a catastrophic mistake — in most cases it can be corrected by swapping levers between doors — but it's an avoidable delay in a schedule that doesn't need more of them.

Finish Confirmation

Handle finish should be confirmed against the full hardware palette of the home before anything is ordered — not against the handles in isolation, and not against a single room's other hardware.

The key comparisons to make: door handles against switch plates (they appear in the same sightline in every room), door handles against hinges (they're seen simultaneously every time a door is open), and door handles against any cabinet hardware in rooms where both are present.

A finish that looks right in product photography can read differently against what's already on the walls. Where possible, request physical samples and confirm them in the actual space, in the actual light conditions. North-facing rooms read differently than south-facing ones. Hinges: The Confirmation Nobody Makes

Hinges are the most overlooked element in a door hardware specification, and the most visible source of finish conflict once the door is hung. A brass lever handle on a chrome hinge is a contradiction that's visible every time the door is open — which, in a lived-in home, is most of the time.

Standard residential interior hinges are inexpensive relative to the rest of the hardware budget. There is no good reason to mismatch them with the handle finish, and yet it happens constantly — because hinges are typically specified by the contractor or the door supplier rather than the designer, and because "matching the finish" is a step that gets skipped when nobody is explicitly responsible for it.

Confirm hinge finish alongside handle finish. If the doors are being supplied pre-hung, confirm with the supplier that the hinges will match before the doors ship.

Quantities: Count, Don't Estimate

Hardware orders estimated rather than counted are the source of most mid-project delays in residential renovation. The estimate is always off — either short, which means a reorder and a wait, or long, which is less of a problem but still represents money tied up in returns.

Use the floor plan walkthrough to generate an exact count: total passage sets, total privacy sets, total dummy sets (remembering that double-door stationary panels each need one), total pocket door pulls. Add ten percent to account for damage in transit, on-site damage during installation, and the door you forgot.

If the project involves phased installation — some doors now, some later — order everything at once. Finish availability changes. Dye lots vary in some finishes. Ordering the second half of the project's hardware six months after the first half is a reliable way to end up with hardware that almost matches.

Lead Time

Architectural hardware typically ships faster than plumbing fixtures or custom cabinetry, but lead times still vary — particularly for less common finishes or non-standard configurations. Confirm lead time at the time of order and build it into the finish schedule, not around it.

Hardware that arrives after the contractor needs it costs time on both ends: time waiting for the hardware, and time rescheduling the installation. Order early enough that the hardware is on-site before it's needed, not on order when it is.

The Confirmation Checklist

Before any order is placed, confirm the following for every door in the home: function (passage, privacy, or dummy), backset (2-3/8" or 2-3/4"), bore diameter (standard or non-standard), door thickness (standard or non-standard), handing (reversible or handed, and if handed, which hand), and finish (confirmed against switch plates, hinges, and cabinet hardware in the same sightline).

Confirm quantities against an actual count. Confirm lead time against the finish schedule. Confirm the return policy before ordering, particularly for finishes you haven't used before.

None of this is complicated. All of it is faster to do before the order than after it. And all of it is faster to do now than to fix once the hardware is installed and the finish work is done around it.
