Where to Put Outlets in a Kitchen: A Placement Guide

Kitchen outlet placement is a rough-in decision — made before drywall goes up, essentially permanent once it does. Most homeowners delegate it entirely to the electrician, who defaults to code minimums and standard positions. Those minimums produce a functional kitchen. They don't produce a designed one.

The difference between a kitchen where outlets were placed thoughtfully and one where they weren't is visible every day. An outlet at standard height on the backsplash wall directly behind the range hood. A cluster of three outlets at counter height positioned exactly where the tile pattern breaks awkwardly. A single outlet on a 12-foot island that's in the wrong spot for how the kitchen actually gets used. These aren't code violations. They're planning failures that happen when nobody asked the right questions before the walls closed.

Here's how to think through kitchen outlet placement before that window shuts.

The Code Baseline

The National Electrical Code requires outlets along countertops at intervals no greater than 4 feet, so that no point along the counter is more than 2 feet from an outlet. Every counter space wider than 12 inches needs at least one outlet. Counters wider than 24 inches need two.

Islands and peninsulas with countertop space of 12 inches or more also require outlets — at least one for smaller islands, two for those over 6 feet long.

That's the minimum. It's a starting point for the conversation, not the end of it.

Counter Height vs. Standard Height

Standard residential outlet height is 12 to 18 inches from the floor. In a kitchen, that puts outlets below the counter — functional for appliances stored on the counter, invisible when the kitchen is in use, and irrelevant to the backsplash design because they're hidden behind the toaster or the stand mixer.

Counter-height outlets sit just above the counter surface, typically 42 to 48 inches from the floor. They're immediately accessible, don't require reaching behind anything, and are fully visible on the backsplash. That visibility is the tradeoff — a counter-height outlet is part of the backsplash design in a way that a below-counter outlet isn't.

For backsplashes with strong tile patterns, large-format stone, or unlacquered brass fixtures that are doing visual work, counter-height outlets need to be positioned deliberately relative to the tile layout. An outlet that bisects a hand-cut tile pattern or sits 2 inches off-center on a marble slab reads as unplanned. Confirm outlet positions against the tile drawing before rough-in.

Island Outlet Placement

Island outlets are required by code but the code doesn't specify where on the island they go. That's a design decision, and it's one that should follow how the island is actually used.

A kitchen island used primarily for prep and dining doesn't need an outlet on the dining side — it needs outlets on the prep side where appliances get used. An island with a built-in charging station or a small appliance area needs outlets positioned for those uses specifically, not at standard intervals that happen to satisfy code.

Pop-up outlets — retractable receptacles that sit flush with the counter surface and extend when needed — are worth considering on islands where surface cleanliness is a priority and the counter material will be used as a serving surface. They're more expensive than standard outlets and require more planning, but they produce a cleaner result on counters where a standard outlet housing would interrupt the material.

Whatever outlet type goes on the island, confirm the position against the seating layout. An outlet on the end of an island that seats two people on that end is an obstacle. An outlet positioned where it won't conflict with seating or prep zones is invisible when the kitchen is in use.

The Backsplash Tile Relationship

This is the detail most electricians don't think about and most tile installers can't fix after the fact. An outlet box set during rough-in determines where the outlet will be on the finished backsplash wall. If that position wasn't confirmed against the tile layout before rough-in, the outlet may land in the middle of a field tile, on a grout line that wasn't planned for it, or in a position that requires cutting tiles in ways that read as improvised.

The conversation to have before rough-in: share the tile layout drawing with your electrician and confirm that outlet boxes will be positioned to align cleanly with the tile pattern. On large-format stone or tile, this means the outlet should sit fully within a single tile or cleanly on a grout line — not bisecting a tile arbitrarily. On smaller mosaic or subway tile, the alignment is more forgiving but still worth confirming. On the hardware decisions that need to happen before finish work locks in the palette.

Dedicated Circuits and Their Locations

Kitchen appliances with high draw — refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, ranges, and large countertop appliances — require dedicated circuits. Those circuits need outlets in specific locations, and the locations need to be confirmed before rough-in.

A refrigerator outlet positioned 6 inches too far to the left means the refrigerator cord is visible on the wall rather than running cleanly behind the unit. A microwave outlet in the wrong cabinet will require the cord to cross visible space to reach the outlet. A range outlet set at the wrong height relative to the anti-tip bracket doesn't allow the range to sit flush against the wall.

These are small details that compound in a finished kitchen. Confirm the position of every dedicated circuit outlet against the specific appliance going into that location before the electrician sets boxes.

Under-Cabinet Outlet Strips

Under-cabinet outlets — power strips or individual outlets mounted to the underside of upper cabinets — are worth specifying in any kitchen where countertop appliance use is frequent and visible outlet clutter is a concern. They keep cords vertical rather than horizontal across the counter, reduce the visual noise of multiple cords running to backsplash outlets, and make small appliances significantly more usable.

They need to be planned during cabinet fabrication, not added after the cabinets are installed. The wiring runs inside the wall behind the upper cabinets and feeds the outlet strip through the cabinet body. If the cabinet is already installed, adding under-cabinet outlets requires opening the wall. During rough-in it requires a single dedicated run.

GFCI Requirements in the Kitchen

All counter-area outlets within 6 feet of a sink require GFCI protection under current NEC code. That covers most kitchen countertop outlets in a typical layout.

GFCI outlets have a larger face than standard outlets because of the test and reset buttons, which affects both the outlet housing and the cover plate. If finish consistency matters — and in a kitchen where hardware has been specified with intention, it should — confirm that GFCI-compatible cover plates are available in your chosen finish before the electrician orders devices.

The alternative is a GFCI breaker at the panel, which protects the entire circuit without requiring a GFCI device at each outlet. This allows standard outlets throughout while maintaining code compliance and makes it easier to specify consistent cover plates across the kitchen without accommodating the larger GFCI face. Outlet Covers as Part of the Kitchen Design

A kitchen where the backsplash tile was specified carefully, the faucet was upgraded, the cabinet pulls were confirmed against the overall finish palette — and the outlet covers are white plastic — is a kitchen that didn't finish the thought.

Outlet covers appear on the most visible walls in the kitchen. They sit at counter height where they're seen every time someone stands at the counter. In a kitchen with aged brass or matte black hardware, white plastic outlet covers are a visible contradiction of every other finish decision in the room.

Specifying outlet covers in the same finish as the rest of the kitchen hardware is one of the smaller decisions in a renovation and one of the most visible in the finished result. The Timing

All of this needs to happen before rough-in. Not during finish work. Not after the tile is set. Before the electrician pulls wire and sets boxes.

That window is earlier in the project timeline than most homeowners expect — often before cabinetry drawings are finalized, sometimes before tile is selected. The conversations to have: confirm outlet positions against the furniture layout, the tile drawing, the appliance specifications, and the finish palette.
