The black plates disappeared into the wallpaper

“I didn’t want plain white switches breaking up the pattern. The black plates blend in, and the brass details tie back to the lighting.”

This powder room is small, so the wallpaper does most of the work. Once it was installed, the original white switches and outlet looked completely out of place. They were right in the middle of the pattern and immediately caught your eye.

We replaced them with matte black plates and chose brass controls to pick up the warmer lines in the wallpaper and the light fixture. The dimmer has been especially useful because the exposed bulbs can feel bright in such a compact room.

The stone in this bathroom has a lot going on, so choosing the smaller details took longer than expected. Chrome felt too bright, and matte black pulled too much attention away from the walls. We ended up using aged brass for the switches, and that was the right call.

It is not something guests immediately point out, but the bathroom would look noticeably different with standard plastic switches.

The switches finally match the rest of the house

“The old white switches were the first thing I noticed every time I walked through this hallway. These black ones feel like they were always supposed to be here.”

We had already painted the walls and updated the trim, but the original plastic switches still made the hallway look unfinished. I chose the matte black finish because we have a few other black details around the house, and I wanted everything to connect without looking too coordinated.

The double switch is used constantly, so I was a little worried that a nicer plate might feel too delicate. It doesn’t. The toggles feel solid, and the dark finish is easy to keep clean. Even the single switch by the windows looks better now. It was a small part of the renovation, but replacing both made the whole wall look much neater.
