Material and finish have different jobs

The material beneath a surface and the finish you see are separate parts of a product's specification. A finish name describes a visual option; it should not have to carry the whole story about construction or care.

For our switches and outlets, begin with the material information on the individual product page, then consider the finish in the context of the room. The Toggle Switch, for example, offers a way to compare the same control shape across different finishes without changing the design language at every wall position.

Proportion gives the detail its place

A plate frames the control. Its size, spacing and visible fixings affect whether the detail feels quiet or prominent. A single switch beside a doorway and a group of controls in an open kitchen need to be considered at different scales.

This is why we encourage looking at the assembled piece rather than selecting from a finish swatch alone. Compare it with the wall color, trim and nearby handles. Where several devices share a wall, consider them as a group.
